Intially, I was skeptical about this book. All of the reviews seemed to be from people who knew the author or are professional copywriters, and they were a little too persuasive and polished. "This is the best fundraising book ever," etc.I'm 20something fundraiser getting a crash course in the science of fundraising. I've never met the author nor do I plan do. I'm in online fundraising, but these concepts translate easily.This book is a great summary of the concepts I've discovered over the last 6-8 months about effective fundraising. It's the sort of book that gives you a foundation. It would would be great to come back to before you write copy or use it to get everyone in your organization on the same page about the purpose of your fundraising communications.I finished my copy last night and passed it off to my colleague this morning. I want my supervisor and management team to read it. Soon.The book reads like great fundraising copy, which means it's a fast read. It's entertaining and uses stories. I sat down last night to read a chapter, and was 34 pages into the book before I looked up.This book's strength is how quickly it engages the reader and distills the key points of great fundraising writing. It would be an excellent book to give to anyone who writes, reviews or edits your fundraising communications.

This brief paperback is packed with gems. Wisdom. Inspiration. Creativity. More importantly it is direct and honest. $22 for this little paperback, you gotta be kidding! I assure you. This quick read is worth your money, your organizations budget and your precious time.Every volunteer, committee or board member is certain they know how to raise money. Worse yet, your executive director, president, Dean, board chair knows best. Early on in the book, Mr. Brooks equips you to work with self-appointed well meaning philanthropy geniuses. He says, “Fundraising is a profession. It has a body of knowledge and a set of principles. It’s not a jerry-rigged monstrosity created by amateurs and volunteers. It’s not a dumbed-down version of commercial marketing.”From here he launches into reminders of what you do and why. What raises money and what does not? The topic is direct mail. But reminders abound of the importance of the case, the donor, the solicitation and stories. You find yourself eager to start the next appeal letter. Or just to sit down and read the book again to bathe in the supportive and familiar and ponder at the permission Brooks gives to lighten up and be real. To grin from ear to ear as he debunks all the shared myths. Has he been in the hallways of your workplace! Wow, you are not alone and defenseless.You will not be surprised that donors are your heroes. But do you know to ask 6 or 7 times, make the letter long and ignore grammar? That the PS always gets read? This book is not espousing fundraising art or philosophy. It is a pragmatic unabashed guide about what you need to do to raise money. Veteran Brooks clearly outlines pragmatic tested tactics that have brought in gifts over time. It's an easy read, and it has a wealth of great information that the standard business writing textbook doesn't cover. Brooks has a ton of real-world experience to share. If you want to write well for nonprofits, you should give this book a shot. In addition to being a best selling textbook author, ALAN BRINKLEY is the Allan Nevins Professor of History and former Provost at Columbia University. He is the author of Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and the Great Depression, which won the 1983 National Book Award; The End of Reform: New Deal Liberalism in Recession and War; and Liberalism and its Discontents. His most recent books are John F. Kennedy: The American Presidents Series: The 35th President, 1961-1963 and The Publisher: Henry Luce and His American Century both published recently. He was educated at Princeton and Harvard and taught previously at MIT, Harvard, and the City University Graduate School before joining the Columbia faculty In 1991. In 1998-1999, he was the Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University. He won the Joseph R. Levenson Memorial Teaching Award at Harvard in 1987 and the Great Teacher Award at Columbia in 2003. The Qur’an was not codified until approximately 300 years after the death of the prophet. The Hadith is a collection of the words and deeds of the prophet. There is more than one Hadith because various groups investigated the accuracy of the collected words and deeds of the prophet. Wahhabists believe Islam is a continuation of the religion of Abraham, therefore Islam is not a new religion. Essentially they believe that Islam should be practiced conservatively without modern influences. Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, a scholar, created the Hanbal school of thought that prescribes the way a Muslim should approach Sharia (the book indicates there are eight different schools of thought on how a Muslim should approach sharia). The Hanbal school of thought is a precursor to Wahabbism. Roughly 300 years later another Muslim scholar Taqi Ad-Din Ahmad Ibn Taymiyyah wrote books that described in depth how a Muslim state should be ruled. Taymiyyah developed an ideology that a Muslim can accuse another Muslim of not following the religion. Any Muslim not following the true Muslim religion can be punished with death. Mohammed Ibn Abd Al-Wahhab is the founder of Wahabbism. Mohammed Ibn Abd Al-Wahhab developed an accommodation with the Saudi ruling family. The rest of the book describes the first two attempts to establish a Saudi State and the establishment of the present day Saudi State. One has to read the book to understand why the author seems to think the present day Saudi State is unlikely to survive because of its dealings with the West. After writing this piece, I decided I liked the book better and gave the book four stars instead of my original thought of three stars.

About the Author
Brian DeLay (Ph.D., Harvard) is Assistant Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley. He specializes in colonial and 19th century U.S. and Mexican history. His scholarship has won awards from the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic, the Western History Association, the Council on Latin American History, the American Society for Ethnohistory, the Pacific Coast Branch of the American Historical Association, and the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations. He is the author of War of a Thousand Deserts: Indian Raids and the U.S.-Mexican War (Yale, 2008), and is currently at work on a book about the international arms trade and the re-creation of the Americas during the long nineteenth century. Michael B. Stoff is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Plan II Honors Program at the University of Texas at Austin. The recipient of a Ph.D. from Yale University, he has been honored many times for his teaching, most recently with election to the Academy of Distinguished Teachers. He is the author of Oil, War, and American Security: The Search for a National Policy on Foreign Oil,1941-1947, co-editor (with Jonathan Fanton and R. Hal Williams) of The Manhattan Project: A Documentary Introduction to the Atomic Age, and series co-editor (with James West Davidson) of the Oxford New Narratives in American History. He is currently working on a narrative on the bombing of Nagasaki.

James West Davidson received his B.A. from Haverford College and his Ph.D. from Yale University. A historian who has pursued a full-time writing career, he is the author of numerous books, among them After the Fact: The Art of Historical Detection (with Mark H. Lytle), The Logic of Millennial Thought: Eighteenth Century New England, and Great Heart: The History of a Labrador Adventure (with John Rugge). He is co-editor with Michael Stiff of the Oxford New Narratives in American History, in which his most recent book appears: 'They Say': Ida B. Wells and the Reconstruction of Race.

Christine Leigh Heyrman is Associate Professor of History at the University of Delaware. She received a Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University and is the author of Commerce and Culture: The Maritime Communities of Colonial Massachusetts, 1690-1750. Her book exploring the evolution of religious culture in the Southern U.S., entitled Southern Cross: The Beginnings of the Bible Belt, was awarded the Bancroft Prize in 1998.

Mark H. Lytle received his Ph.D. from Yale University and is Professor of History and Environmental Studies. he has served two years as Mary Ball Washington Professor of American History at University College, Dublin, in Ireland. His publications include The Origins of the Iranian-American Alliance, 1941-1953, After the Fact: The Art of Historical Detection (with James West Davidson), America's Uncivil Wars: The Sixties Era from Elvis to the Fall of Richard Nixon, and, most recently, The Gentle Subversive: Rachel Carson, Silent Spring, and the Rise of the Environmental Movement. He is co-editor of a joint issue of the journals of Diplomatic History and Environmental History dedicated to the field of environmental diplomacy.
