September 1940 England is going it alone under daily bombardment from the Germans during the Blitz. I have been an avid reader of this series and was delighted to find this story is wonderfully executed and tremendously enjoyable. You truly do not need to read the previous books in the series to enjoy this novel. I put a little background below (no spoilers). I have enjoyed all in the series, some are 5 stars others 4 or 3 stars, and this was a 5 star read. It's a nicely convoluted plot that eventually involves the The US ambassador to great Britain, Nazi sympathizer Joseph P. Kennedy.Book one: Maisie Dobbs got her start as a maid in an aristocratic London household when she was thirteen. Her employer, suffragette Lady Rowan Compton, soon became her patron, taking the remarkably bright youngster under her wing. Lady Rowan's friend, Maurice Blanche, often retained as an investigator by the European elite, recognized Maisie’s intuitive gifts and helped her earn admission to the prestigious Girton College in Cambridge, where Maisie planned to complete her education. The outbreak of WW1 in 1914 changed everything. Maisie trained as a nurse, then left for France to serve at the Front, where she found—and lost—an important part of herself. Ten years after the Armistice, in the spring of 1929, Maisie sets out on her own as a private investigator, one who has learned that coincidences are meaningful, and truth elusive. I feel like I know Maisie. Afterall, I’ve read all of Jacqueline Winspear’s book about the beloved Miss Dobbs.This particular book reminds me of the first novel simply because I fell in love with anything and everything about Maisie, her family, her colleagues, and her friends. I could not put the book down! When I went to sleep around 10pm, I awoke around 2pm. Maisie was calling me! I read for three hours. I didn’t care that I was groggy the next day, I had to find out what was happening next!What a book! Worth every single dollar I spent on it. Share it with your friends too.Enjoy..., and be sure to have a cuppa tea or coffee while reading this page turner.

Every Maisie Dobbs book is the best one! But this one does go beyond wonderful. I'm 81, and a history major, and I've always felt that the second world war was "my" war. As an English friend of mine retorted when I said that: you can have it! What Winspear has done here is to bring it jarringlyy to life, and the work that Murrow and the other newspeople did to bring it to a nation that was being misinformed by experts is incredible. Don't start reading it at night!

I am a HUGE Maisie Dobbs fan. I liked this book a great deal up until the end. It was like Windspeare just cut it off — almost as if she were as tired as Miss Dobbs. Really hoping for another book soon to continue the storyline.

Jacqueline Windspear delivers another great story with well-researched historical backdrop that resonates today. So, how annoying is it that these reviews are required to be a minimum length?

I have read, and in fact, own all of the Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs series and this is definitely my favorite! The only negative is dreading turning the last page and having the enjoyment behind me!

I have enjoyed Maisie Dobbs stories for the last few years and find them very interesting and the time spans in which they cover.

I’m writing this review on my iPad because I’m traveling so it might be a bit shorter than my usual reviews. (Ever write a long review on an iPad? It’s not easy!)“The American Agent” is the 16th in author Jacqueline Winspear’s “Maisie Dobbs” series. She’s also written one stand-alone novel. While I felt the first eight or nine in the series were well written, Winspear’s next few seemed to be mediocre. Did she “lose interest” in her character? That often happens in long running series books. I know I wasn’t the only reviewer who noticed; it must get increasingly difficult to crank out a good novel when you’re writing one a year or so. In any case, Winspear’s work began improving a couple of books back.One of the best things about the Dobbs series is how Winspear moves her characters up in age and circumstance as the series proceeds. Having started Maisie off in early post-Great War England, her 16th book is set in those oh-so dangerous months of 1940 as Germany has begun the Blitz bombing of London and other major British cities. Maisie is still running her detective agency and seems greatful to turn up every morning to find her office intact from the previous night’s bombings. She is also working as an ambulance driver during the raids. One evening the two work with an American war correspondent named Catherine Saxon. Saxon is trying to break into the male-dominated world of radio corespondents, as dominated by Edward Murrow and William Shirer. Unfortunately, Catherine was found murdered in her rooms the following day and Maisie is asked by Scotland Yard and an American agent she had previously worked with in Germany to find the murderer.Now Maisie’s inquiry turns into possible war secrets exposure. Jacqueline Winspear’s writing is adept as she describes those horrible months as England is being pounded from the air, all while waiting and hoping for America’s entry into the war. Winspear gets the Americans reluctance to aid Britain with both war materiel and fighting bodies. The book is good and I think Winspear’s long running readership should like this novel.

In this insightful study of how the American media has portrayed women over the past 50 years, Douglas ( Inventing American Broadcasting: 1899-1922 ) considers the paradox of a generation of women raised to see themselves as bimbos becoming the very group that found its voice in feminism. Modern American women, she suggests, have been fed so many conflicting images of their desires, aspirations and relationships with men, families and one another that they are veritable cultural schizophrenics, uncertain of what they want and what society expects of them. A single image--Diana Ross of the Supremes, for example, or Gidget from the popular sitcom--can send mixed signals, Douglas shows, at once affirming a woman's right to a voice and cautioning her not to go too far. Thus the media is often both a liberating and an oppressive force. Douglas is particularly attentive to the ways pop culture's messages have responded to shifting social and economic imperatives, including the feminist movement itself. While she asserts that pop culture can have a profound impact on one's self-perceptions, she also stresses that women, by the example of their own lives, have changed--mostly for the better--the way the media represents them. The neglect of the cultural history of women from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s worries critic Douglas. In an engaging personal tour through the landscape of television, popular music, new media, and advertising, she retrieves that history while exploring the mixed messages the media delivered to women. She claims that popular girl singing groups like the Shirelles offered new possibilities for female assertiveness, while the television show Bewitched portrayed a woman using magic to escape dull domestic chores. Emphasizing complexity, she relates the ambivalent treatment of women in popular culture to the evolution of the women's liberation movement. Douglas, a professor of media studies at Hampshire College and author of Inventing American Broadcasting: 1899-1922 (LJ 11/1/87), translates intricate academic ideas into witty and accessible prose.
